Raven

Raven woke up the next morning with a pulsing headache and a little bit of nausea that increased when she sat up. It was quiet outside and she could tell that it was still very early, even with the curtains drawn across the window. All the revelers from last night must still be asleep, and for that, Raven was grateful.

She wasn’t much of a drinker in general, and the beer yesterday had gone straight to her head.

She looked at Kit sleeping peacefully beside her, her leg thrown over Raven’s thigh. How had they gotten so intimate, so fast? It had to be the trail and the strange bond that formed from spending twenty-four hours a day with a stranger on the side of a mountain. Kit didn’t feel like a stranger anymore – not at all – and it sort of scared Raven to think about that.

Kit was so young. Ten years younger than Raven, and decades younger in terms of maturity and life experience. She couldn’t possibly be feeling the same way that Raven felt right now, or maybe it was just the lingering effects of the alcohol making her feel anxious.

She slid out from under Kit’s leg, careful not to wake her, and went into the bathroom to take a shower. She stood under the water for a long time, trying to wash her hangover down the drain. It was too hot, and the room was not air conditioned. She suddenly felt claustrophobic and the mountain was calling to her. She’d been away from the trail for too long and she really needed to get back to her journey.

The shower helped, and by the time Raven came back into the room with a towel wrapped around her, the nausea had subsided. Her headache, on the other hand, was still going strong.

“Morning, babe,” Kit said from the bed. “You’re up early.”

“It’s too hot to sleep late,” Raven said. “I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get back on the trail.”

“Sure,” Kit said, although she didn’t say it with much conviction. She sat up, letting the sheets fall down to her lap, and despite her headache, Raven had to acknowledge the strong urge to crawl back into bed with her at that sight.

“You don’t have to if you’d rather stay here,” Raven said. “There are still two more days of the festival. You could catch up with me later if you want.”

Kit frowned. “Are you trying to get rid of me?”

“What?” Raven asked. “No.”

“It kind of sounds like you are,” Kit said. “Am I becoming a pest?”

“God, no,” Raven said. “It’s just that last night you were talking about yellow blazing. You brought it up more than once so I was wondering if you’re getting sick of hiking. I know you never planned to hike this long.”

“Plans change,” Kit said. “And last night I was drunk. I want to keep hiking with you.”

“Okay,” Raven said. “Well, go take a shower and we’ll get on the road in about an hour.
